A Doctorate needs Prospects

A doctorate is an important step towards gaining a professional career both within and outside academia. Often, however, doctoral candidates have to acquire this qualification under uncertain and unequal conditions. The GEW campaigns to change this.

The GEW is the education trade union within the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). Our members in higher education and research institutes include postdocs, university lecturers, employees in academic management, technology and administration as well as doctoral candidates and students. All doctoral candidates are welcome to join the GEW - regardless of their subject area and regardless of whether they are pursuing their doctoral studies while being employed, receiving a scholarship or are just now applying for funding. The GEW also represents your interests at higher education and research institutes.

The GEW strongly campaigns for better conditions for doctoral candidates. This means: sufficient time to carry out independent research, support rather than supervision for working on the thesis, a framework that allows caring for others to be combined with obtaining academic qualifications, an inclusive approach to PhD career paths and supportive graduate centers.

We are calling for clear career prospects after the doctorate and active support for all disadvantaged groups as well as effective structures to combat discrimination. The GEW campaigns to dismantle all the hurdles that make access to a doctorate harder.

This new flyer „A doctorate needs prospects“ provides useful information about the aims und policy of the GEW and gives valuable insight into the support services such as seminars and further material, we are offering. Use it to convince your colleagues of the benefits of joining GEW’s strong solidarity community.

The flyer can be downloaded or ordered from the GEW Shop in minimum quantities of ten copies.
